Parentheses Logic in Batch Criteria

This document addresses understanding the logic of the use of parentheses in Criteria for Self-Service Batch.

For example, let's assume we want to narrow our group to students who are Journalism majors with a minor in Folklore.

Or,

Students with an English major who have 100 credit hours or more.

We need to be sure of what this really means.

Original Criteria Logic

Academic Program equals Journalism

AND

Minors equals Folklore

OR

Academic Program equals English

AND

Credit Hours greater than 100

If set up like the following in the Criteria tab with no parentheses:

And/Or ( Operand Operator Value )
    Academic Program Equals Journalism
And   Minor Equals Folklore
Or   Academic Program Equals English
And   Credit Hours Greater Than 100

Without Parentheses

These criteria pick up the following groups:

  • Journalism majors with Folklore minors, regardless of credit hours earned
  • English majors who have earned more than 100 credit hours

Visually speaking, it would look something like this:

Intent

Our intent was to include students with either Journalism with a Folklore minor or English major, as long as either had earned more than 100 credit hours. To achieve this goal, we must incorporate the use of parentheses.

New Criteria Logic

(Academic program equals Journalism AND minor equals Folklore

OR

Academic program equals English)

AND

Credit hours greater than 100

If set up like the following in the Criteria tab with parentheses:

And/Or ( Operand Operator Value )
   ( Academic Program Equals Journalism
And   Minor Equals Folklore
Or   Academic Program Equals English
And   Credit Hours Greater Than 100

NOTE:
This order does differ from the order in which DARwin/uAchieve handles ANDs and ORs in the sub-requirements.

With Parentheses

Parentheses can be used in the criteria setup to apply the credit hours criteria to both majors. This new set of criteria grabs all of the students we had intended to pickup. The goal was to apply the credit hours criteria after we've already established the students who are Journalism majors with a Folklore minor PLUS students who are English majors. So, we would arrive at this narrow group of students as long as they had earned 100+ hours.

Visually speaking, it would look something like this:
